Below are 14 hidden words.  They are all used when talking about wildlife.  See if you can learn all of them to impress your friends, family and teachers.

Abdomen is the last part of of the body on insects and arachnids.
Camouflage is the word used for blending in with a background.  The cuttle fish surely has the most amazing camouflage in the animal kingdom.  They can change their patterns in an instant to match their surroundings.
Claws are like our finger nails, constantly growing throughout life.  The giant anteater uses its claws to open up termite mounds which can be as hard as concrete.
Herbivore means that an animal only eats plants or green food.  The African elephant is the largest land herbivore and can eat up to 500lbs of vegetation a day!!!
Carnivore means that an animal only eats meat.  Lions, tigers and wolves are all carnivores.
Omnivore means that an animal eats both plant matter and meat.  Brown bears, raccoons and humans (unless vegetarian) are all omnivores.
Thorax is the middle part of an insect.
Nocturnal is the word used for animals that wake up at night.  The common British hedgehog is nocturnal, if they are out during the day then it means something is wrong and they need to see a vet.
Gravid means that a reptile has eggs inside her.
Basking is what "cold blooded" animals do to warm themselves up.  They will find a nice warm place and lay there until their body is at the right temperature.  If they do not do this they will be slow and sluggish and not move very much.
Hibernate is what many animals do to survive cold weather.  They go to sleep for a long time and wake up when the weather is better.  Polar bears actually give birth while hibernating!!!

Territory is an area that an animal will roam.  Some animals mark their territory to tell others that "this is my area, be warned!"  Cats mark their territory by scratching things like trees and spraying urine on different objects.

Arboreal is a term used for animals that spend most of their lives in trees.  Sloths will spend most of the time in trees, they only come down to the floor when they need the loo....which is about once a week!!!
